An Athens travel guide, told by RIANNA + NINA co-founder, Rianna Kounou

RIANNA + NINA is one of fashion’s most fun and flamboyant brands – known for its bold colours and one-of-a-kind prints sustainably imbued onto vintage textiles from around the world. Founded by Rianna Kounou and Nina Knaudt, from a shared love of vintage, art and collectors’ pieces, the brand is stocked in over 50 boutiques and hotels, with two fabulous stores in Paris and Marbella. Born in Athens, co-founder Kounou uses the cradle of Western civilisation as constant inspiration. Here, the stylish industry giant shares her favourite places in the Greek capital, her must-visit Greek island, secrets spots and what’s always in her suitcase.

What’s your road most travelled?

The road I most love to walk is Patriarchou Ioakim Street in Athens. I grew up on this street, which holds many beautiful memories of my childhood. It’s special to have such places that always remind you of times gone by when you visit them.

Where is home for you? Why is is special?

Home for me is Athens. I grew up here and have spent a large part of my life in this city. Athens holds a special place in my heart and is incredibly important to me. Many of my friends live here, and being in Athens always feels like coming back to where I belong. I love the city’s culture, the sea-scented breeze that wafts through its streets, and the delicious food that brings me joy.

If someone had 24 hours in Athens, where would you send them?

I would definitely recommend starting at Lycabettus Hill in Athens, which offers a unique view of the city and a glimpse into its history. Then, a visit to the Monastiraki neighborhood is a must. Besides its many ancient sights, it hosts the famous Sunday flea market where I love to hunt for vintage treasures. Another great atmosphere can be found in the small port town of Piraeus, perfect for visiting a nice restaurant or simply enjoying the sea breeze. No visit to Athens should miss swimming in Lake Vouliagmeni, where you can enjoy an idyllic moment by the beach without leaving the city.

Favourite restaurant, bar and shopping area in Athens?

My favourite restaurant in Athens is definitely Taverna ton Filon. It offers an authentic Greek dining experience with delicious traditional dishes and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. For a night out, my favourite bar is Island, which is known for its stunning seaside location, chic ambiance, and excellent cocktails. When it comes to shopping, I absolutely love Enny Monaco. This boutique offers a curated selection of high-end fashion and unique pieces, making it my go-to spot for finding distinctive items. Plus, you can find some of our RIANNA + NINA pieces there, which makes it even more special for me.

Athens is known as the cradle of civilisation and one of the world’s most popular cities, but are there any lesser-known sites travellers should visit, on top of the world-famous attractions?

A hidden gem I recommend is Philopappos Hill. Even though it’s very central, not many people know about it. From the hill, you have an incredibly stunning view of Athens and the Acropolis. Moreover, the hill offers a lot of nature that you can enjoy right in the middle of the city.

How does the city of Athens inspire your brand and collections?

Just walking through the city and seeing the architecture, smelling the scents, and seeing the colors provide enough inspiration. As a designer, I always try to incorporate a part of myself, a piece of my homeland, and the associated way of life into my creations.

If Athens were an outfit, item of clothing would it be?

Definitely a jumpsuit.

The Greek island of Hydra

Outside of Athens, what are your favourite places in Greece? Why?

One of my favourite places in Greece is the island of Hydra. The island has something magical about it and is steeped in history. Everything is more relaxed here because no cars are allowed, and you navigate the narrow streets with their old buildings on foot. The scenery almost feels like a movie set and makes you forget the world around you.

You create colourful, vibrant pieces full of life that are perfect for travel. Tell us about why you created the RIANNA + NINA brand?

Since I was 15, my mother had a shop in Athens and a costume rental for the theater, so I was always surrounded by these things and grew to love them. I started with my own vintage store, and when my path crossed with Nina’s, we knew we wanted to showcase our creations on a larger scale.

What’s the RIANNA + NINA item (or items) you can’t travel without?

These kimonos are incredibly versatile and can be easily combined with any outfit, making them perfect for any occasion. Plus, they fold up compactly, fitting effortlessly into any suitcase, which makes them an ideal travel companion.

Do you have an in-flight (or mid-travel) routine?

Drawing on a flight is a must. When I paint, I create order in my mind. It helps me focus and reflect on things.

Are you a frequent traveller? If so, have you had a recent travel discovery?

I travel extensively for work, as we have flagship stores in Paris and Marbella, and our partners and customers are spread across the globe. This year, I visited Marrakech for the first time, and it was amazing.

Where’s on your travel bucket list for the year ahead/this summer?

I have a strong desire to visit India. The country is a vast and diverse tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and experiences. I’m especially fascinated by the rich history, the vibrant markets for vintage treasures, and the delicious cuisine.

Where is a destination that you visited and fell in love with?

The south of Italy has a special charm that captured my heart. The moment I arrived, I felt a deep connection to its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes. I was enchanted by the warmth and hospitality of the people, the slower pace of life, and the incredible flavors of the local cuisine.

You have stores in Paris and Marbella, where would be the dream place to open? Does any city (Athens?) hold a special place in your heart?

Our stores in Paris and Marbella are already stunning locations. Another city I would definitely consider is Athens, as well as Los Angeles. Athens holds a special place in my heart as it is my hometown, and Los Angeles is a beautiful city with a climate and culture that I deeply appreciate and enjoy.
