Dr Barbara Sturm

Dr Barbara Sturm has become almost synonymous with great skincare and a vigilant, multi-step routine. Travelling across the world for new store openings, pop-ups and press launches, Sturm isn’t always in full control of her schedule, which is why she adheres to a strict travel beauty regime which keeps her skin glowing, no matter how many long-haul flights or timezones she’s encountered. Read on to discover Dr Barbara Sturm’s travel beauty tips.

What’s in your handbag?

I carry the Dr Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Face Mist in my bag to refresh and replenish my skin throughout the day, my Glow Drops – I like to use them instead of makeup for a natural and healthy ‘Sturmglow’ S – and my Lip Balm. If I’m somewhere warm, I also always make sure I carry my mini-sized Sun Drops SPF50 too.

What do you pack first?

I make sure I have all of my travel-sized products packed and ready. I always carry the Dr Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Face Mist, Hyaluronic Serum and Face Cream.

Do you have an in-flight ritual?

I recommend having a really good skincare routine with you on the plane which you can reapply throughout the flight. If you sleep on the plane, apply the Face Mask and leave it on whilst you sleep to lock in hydration. If it’s a day flight, I’ll re-apply my Hyaluronic Serum and Face Cream multiple times throughout the flight, and I also keep my Hyaluronic Face Mist to hand for regular skin refreshes. If the shades are open, which they shouldn’t be, then I use the Sun Drops SPF5, because UVA rays penetrate windows. I also always have my Anti-Pollution Drops which protect skin against environmental pollution and my Glow Drops to make my skin pop and avoid travel dullness. As well as a good skincare routine I never drink alcohol on the flight; I drink a lot of water, take a lot of rest and try not to eat too much food.

The beauty essential you never travel without?

I love all my products and I created all of them for a reason so it’s very difficult to choose a favourite but if I had to it would be my Super Anti-Ageing Face Cream. It’s my ultimate one-stop-shop if I’m on the go and provides hydration, protection and anti-ageing properties based on advanced ingredient science and years of formulation development.

What is your jet-lag cure?

If I’m jet lagged, I take my Good Night supplements before bed for a restful and restorative night’s sleep.

 What’s your personal skincare routine?

I am obsessed with my products, I’m my biggest fan. I love the feeling it gives when I do my routine – it makes me happy with myself, and that’s what we’re all looking for. My personal routine is sometimes just my hyaluronic serum face cream is I don’t have much time, this is an absolute must-have you cannot get around it, but I’m also obsessed with my Better B and I use my blood cream in the morning and night cream in the evening – my night cream is insane. I always used to say ‘you just need one cream’, but your skin does have different needs in the day.

Tell us your thoughts on sun? Should we be keeping clear?

It’s not all about being militant about stuff and it’s about enjoying life when it comes to sun. We need sun, we were born above the earth, sun is important for our bones, immune, respiratory system and mental health, so we cannot exclude ourselves from the sun. Lifestyle matters when it comes to sun protection. Honestly, sunscreen is not the best ingredient for your skin, perse, but keep your skin barrier function strong and healthy and stay out of the midday sun – but I don’t think we should demonise the sun too much.

In the Middle East, we’re hit with heat and humidity, which can lead to pigmentation. How can we keep this under control?

Our products are really great for heat and humidity because they’re refreshing and super hydrating, nothing sits on the skin and makes you sweat. Pigmentation is caused by the sun and if you have more melanin in your skin you’re prone to way more inflammation – and everyone jumps to the quick fix like lasers to fix this. The problem with this is it makes your skin way more vulnerable. Don’t take the quick fix and opt for our anti-pollution and brightening lines which even out the skin tone, also the cleanser and our supplement specially designed for this, a hyperpigmentation supplement which supports skin from the inside. I also use my eye cream and glow drops on a regular basis and use my face mask once a day. I also travel with my shampoo, conditioner and body wash, you can’t forget these items and have to be super careful, because remember, it’s all being absorbed into your skin!
