What it’s like to stay at Dorchester Collection’s quiet luxury, city centre, marina-front hotel
There was much hype in the run-up to Dorchester Collection’s Middle East debut, The Lana Dubai. The property was set to fill a gap for quiet luxury, far removed from the typical Dubai gloss and ‘in-your-face’ experience. It was also expected to deliver the elevated taste of its world-famous siblings – The Beverly Hills Hotel, Hôtel Plaza Athénée, and of course, London’s Dorchester. Thankfully, the hotel lives up to the mark – towering above Marasi Marina in a futuristic, Jenga-like structure, and housing one of the most genteel properties in the region.
A stay at The Lana Dubai guarantees a breezy experience, where rooms and décor are tasteful and subdued, with a splash of Lana burgundy (incredibly in vogue) and highlights like the region’s first Dior Spa, a stunning rooftop pool and bar, and impressive culinary destinations. Even entry-level rooms feel well appointed and luxurious, featuring one of the comfiest beds around. Add to this a wonderful afternoon tea – perhaps this magazine’s favourite in Dubai – and you’ve got a standout property. Not to mention its inclusion in the World’s 50 Best Hotels in its debut year.
Cutting a commanding figure on the new Marasi Marina, The Lana is visible across the area thanks to its towering structure, designed by Foster + Partners. There’s a relaxed feel to the neighbourhood – bobbing yachts and a promenade for canal walks and exploration – plus arguably one of the best views of the Burj Khalifa and Downtown (especially from the rooftop bar). As is typical of Dubai’s roads, getting to and from the property can be a hassle, but thanks to its canal location, it’s walkable to Business Bay, Downtown, D3, and more, in cooler weather, of course.
The lobby is near-silent, adding to the quiet luxury feel – except at tea time, when the tinkle of a piano and hum of chatter fills the space. There’s an old-world charm to it all, despite the newness, with service largely inspired by the classic Dorchester Collection style. Upstairs, the rooftop bar is more youthful and vibrant. Our chatty waiter shares stories of his native Colombia as we enjoy cocktails and one of the best burgers in Dubai, overlooking the twinkling cityscape and Burj Khalifa.
Elegant, minimalist, and perfectly balancing modernity with old-world charm. Signature burgundy, pink and cream hues, marbles and florals, with warmth from exposed woods and rich textures. There are picture windows everywhere, flooding the hotel with light and warmth.
The same modern, quiet luxury continues in the rooms – which overlook either suburban Dubai districts or the Marasi Marina and Burj Khalifa. The latter is what you want. Our Marina Junior Suite is well appointed, with a small seating area and a supremely comfortable bed, plus a mini walk-in wardrobe and marble bathroom – complete with a soaking tub by the picture window. It offers just enough space for two to have moments apart. The subtle burgundy touches add a lovely design note. You get the sense that you could actually spend time in the space, thanks to its thoughtful layout. But the Superior Suites – such as the Terrace, Duplex and Royal – are where the true elegance and prestige of the Dorchester Collection shine through.
Dorchester Collection is known for its dining, and The Lana has aimed to impress with collaborations with esteemed chefs from around the world. Jean Imbert has two concepts: Riviera on the second floor, serving in a bright dining room and Burj Khalifa-facing terrace; and High Society – one of the most stunning rooftop bars and restaurants with the same mesmerising views. The latter is a triumph – a cool hangout for cocktails and catch-ups by the infinity pool overlooking the water (guests only by day). Rest assured, cocktails and bites are delicious, and the vibes are ideal, worthy of taking visiting friends and family, or for an impressive date night. In the day, there’s a Beverly Hills-style atmosphere in the glass-box restaurant, which serves dishes from sister hotels, like the famous Beverly Hills Hotel Chopped Salad.
Jara by Martín Berasategui brings the fire and flavour of Basque cuisine to Dubai. Order the croquettes with a crisp glass of Albariño. The terrace is perfect for drinks, perched on a platform of the jigsaw-like building, with towering palms, views, and a fantastic sound system. Breakfast is classic and served in Riviera, and new openings include Dorchester London’s famous China Tang. The afternoon tea is where the hotel truly shines – perhaps the best in the city – bringing a slice of Dorchester London’s heritage, impeccable service and timeless style to Dubai.
Aside from Dorchester Collection’s illustrious reputation, The Lana’s claim to fame is hosting the region’s first Dior Spa – a beautifully fragrant ode to the French house. The spa is very popular, so guests should book in advance. For a hotel of its calibre – and as a city and business property – it’s a real shame there are no facilities like a sauna or steam room, though there is a gym. The rooftop features a sweeping infinity pool with city and Burj Khalifa views, perfect for laps or leisurely paddling. Book a cabana for a luxe day out.
The Lana is a great option for a refined city stay in Dubai – one that offers a slice of peaceful and discreet luxury. With its marina location and rooftop views, it remains well connected to Downtown and the airport. The walkability around the canal is a huge plus, and rooms have everything you need for a long or short stay. We loved the rooftop pool, High Society’s cocktails and atmosphere, afternoon tea, and the beauty of the Dior Spa. However, for a city hotel, we’d have loved to see busier restaurants and better urban facilities like a sauna and steam room.
