One of Maldives’ newest resorts, just a 15-minute boat ride from the Velana International Airport
Family travel expert Maryanne Peacock checks into one of Maldives‘ newest resorts, positioned as the perfect easy escape for families at just a 15-minute boat ride from the Velana International Airport
There’s just something about arriving in the Maldives that never gets old. One minute you’re in the chaos of the airport, the next you’re gliding over water so turquoise it almost doesn’t look real. Time instantly slows down – island mode activated. But on Hathaa Finolhu in the Kaafu Atoll, the JW Marriott Maldives somehow makes that magic feel brand new again.
This isn’t your classic thatched-roof hideaway. It’s bold, modern and design-forward – a resort with curves, confidence and a whole lot of personality. It’s got all the barefoot luxury you could want, but it’s also wonderfully relaxed, and totally geared towards families. The architecture catches your eye, sure, but it’s the atmosphere that gets you – warm, unpretentious and full of life.
From the moment you step off the speedboat (it’s just a 15-minute hop from Malé’s Velana International Airport), you know you’re in good hands. The staff greet you by name, the kids are handed bags full of activities, and instantly you feel that rare thing: a family holiday where everyone – big and small – can actually unwind.

The island itself is straight out of a screensaver. Powdery white sand wraps around a lagoon that shifts from bright turquoise to deep sapphire depending on the light. One side is calm and glassy, perfect for paddling and paddle boarding, while the other has a bit more wave – great for crab-hunting at sunset and spotting baby stingrays skimming along the shallows. Every corner feels a little bit different, but all of it is impossibly beautiful.
The villas here are stunning – sleek, spacious and designed with a real sense of style. Think warm wood, high ceilings, glass walls and views that never get old. You’ve got the choice between overwater villas perched above the lagoon, beach villas tucked into the greenery, and some seriously impressive multi-bedroom options for bigger families or groups.
For us, the Family Beach Pool Villa was perfect. It’s huge – more than 200 square metres – with a separate entrance and bathroom, bunk beds for the kids (an absolute hit) and direct access to the beach. The setup makes family life easy: you can watch the kids build sandcastles while you sip coffee from the sofa, or sneak a dip in the private pool once they’ve crashed out.
If you want something next-level, there’s the three-bedroom Ocean Residence – an overwater escape which comes with its own gym, spa room and – yes – a water slide that drops straight into the sea. It’s part luxury villa, part playground.

Now, let’s talk food – because honestly, the dining here blew us away. Every restaurant has its own vibe and the quality is exceptional across the board.
Riva quickly became one of our favourites. I love a good curry and the options were endless – they did a great Butter Chicken and the local Maldivian options were all very good. Then there’s Athiri, the charcoal-grill steakhouse, where we had a fantastic steak. Perfectly cooked, smoky, melt-in-your-mouth – it’s the kind of meal you talk about for days.
Veyo is your go-to for breakfast and easy all-day dining, Nikkei serves up Japanese favourites with a fun twist, and Pure is where you’ll find chef’s-table dining and wellness-led menus if you’re after something lighter. Wahoo, the beach and pool bar, does exactly what it should – good drinks, great tunes and a view that’ll have you staying for ‘just one more’. Even Tito’s is worth a mention – the pastries and coffee are spot-on.
Everywhere you eat, you’ll find ingredients picked fresh from the resort’s JW Garden – herbs, veggies and flowers that make the dishes taste as good as they look.

The Spa by JW is pure bliss. It’s set over the water, with treatment rooms that open straight onto the ocean, and the sound of the waves becomes part of the experience. It’s calm, minimal and exactly the kind of place you want to lose an afternoon. I had the Island Harmony massage – a dreamy mix of Balinese and Swedish techniques – and honestly, it was one of the best massages I’ve had in years. You know the kind where you drift somewhere between awake and asleep? That.
The spa also offers facials using BABOR products, body rituals inspired by the sea, and even mini treatments for kids (because why shouldn’t they have their own pamper moment?). If you’re into yoga or meditation, the spa pavilion is perfect – open-air, peaceful and right above the lagoon.
When you’re ready to swap calm for adventure, the island’s watersports centre has everything: kayaking, parasailing, e-foiling, catamaran sailing, Seabobs, jet skis – the works. But the absolute highlight for us was the snorkelling trip. We headed out to swim with stingrays and nurse sharks, and I have never been that close to these incredible creatures before. Gliding beside them, just a few feet away, was magical – one of those pinch-me travel moments I’ll never forget. It was brilliantly organised too – safe, smooth, and so much fun.
We also joined a cooking class, which turned out to be another family favourite. The kids loved getting hands-on, learning how to make Maldivian dishes, and – of course – tasting their creations (with a lot of giggles along the way).
If you’re travelling with kids, this place is gold. The Family by JW Kids Club is easily one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s colourful, creative and full of life. There’s an outdoor splash pad and climbing area, indoor playrooms for arts, crafts and games, and a full schedule of daily activities that actually keep kids engaged. The team there are fantastic – genuinely warm, patient and endlessly enthusiastic. You can tell they love what they do, and the kids absolutely adored them.
Every morning, our two ran off to the club and came back hours later, covered in paint and stories. It meant we could actually relax – guilt-free – knowing they were happy, entertained and in the best hands. That, for me, is the definition of a successful family holiday.
What I loved most about JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort is how different it feels from other resorts. It’s modern and architectural, but never cold or corporate. There’s warmth in the design – curved lines, natural materials, light everywhere. The whole island has this effortless balance of luxury and comfort.
The pool area sums it up perfectly: there’s space for everyone, shallow areas for little ones, cabanas for parents, and a bit of privacy if you want it.
The JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll has cracked the code on what a family-friendly luxury resort should be. It’s stylish without being stuffy, modern without losing its soul, and genuinely welcoming to guests of all ages. The food is incredible, the villas are gorgeous, and the kids’ club is next-level. Add in a dreamy spa, a world of adventure just off the jetty, and a team that goes above and beyond, and you’ve got something really special.
We left sun-kissed, relaxed and already talking about when we could come back – which, to me, says it all. Rafa, my eldest, even cried as the boat headed back to Males as he didnt want to leave. Because this isn’t just another Maldivian resort. It’s a place that makes you feel at home, even when you’re halfway across the world.
