“We try to put odd things together,” says the eccentric British designer, who has partnered with the luxury Mayfair hotel to create one of the most fabulous suites in London

Legendary British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith is best known for his love of colour – his signature rainbow-hued stripes and sharp tailoring synonymous with the British marque. In a momentary move away from his beloved menswear, Sir Paul has collaborated with Rocco Forte Hotels to bring to life one of the most colourful, creative and unique hotel suites in the capital – the Sir Paul Smith Suite at the beautiful Brown’s Hotel, London.

Located on the storied streets of Mayfair – one of the British capital’s most affluent postcodes – the suite at Brown’s Hotel is a stone’s throw from Sir Paul’s Albemarle Street store, and features a range of custom and vintage furniture hand-picked artworks, brand collaborations and soft furnishings from the debut Paul Smith home collection.

The hotel suite was designed by Sir Paul himself, in collaboration with Olga Polizzi, Director of Design at Rocco Forte, something the beloved Briton took very seriously, and personally. The suite features furniture and art that resonates with the designer and his eclectic taste – several pieces can be found in Sir Paul’s own office at his Covent Garden HQ, such as Christopher Simon Sykes’ photograph of Chatsworth House library and, notably, his 1970s leather desk chair by Mario Bellini. Adding even more of a personal touch to the Brown’s Hotel suite, Paul has also selected a small library of art and design books for the room.

The quirky experience starts before even entering the room, with the suite marked by a banana door handle. Once inside, quirky touches include the fire ‘dogs’ (which have been custom-made to resemble Homer, Paul’s first canine shopkeeper), a robot figurine made from a vintage camera, and the striped fireplace tiles – a reflection of Paul’s whimsical sense of humour.

Guests can expect highlights from the designers’ most notable collaborations – including sofas, tables and leather goods from his recent ‘Everyday Life’ partnership with Italian luxury furniture company DePadova; Type 75 lamps from the longstanding collaboration with British lighting brand Anglepoise; and checked wool blankets designed by Paul for design company Maharam.

As per the five-star family-owned hotel brand, which is most famed for its iconic properties in Italy, the partnership came about naturally. Polizzi, responsible for the design of each of the individual rooms at Brown’s Hotel, is a long-time customer of Paul Smith’s Albemarle Street shop.

The partnership came about naturally, through Rocco Forte Hotels’ Director of Design Olga Polizzi, who is responsible for the design of each of the individual rooms at Brown’s Hotel and is a long-time visitor to Paul Smith’s Albemarle Street shop. A handful of references to the Albemarle Street flagship shop – just moments from the property – are also in the suite: Paul Smith + The Rug Company rugs and a Maharam headboard, both of which feature a geometric pattern inspired by the building’s iconic iron façade.

Naturally, the suite is set to inspire some shopping inspiration, and when it strikes, Brown’s Hotel London has an in-suite catalogue offering select pieces from the suite such as prints, custom details and the Paul Smith home collection.

“Being asked to design a space for such an iconic Mayfair institution is a great privilege – and I’ve had a great deal of fun in the process!,” said Sir Paul Smith. “Just like Browns does with its rooms, we design every Paul Smith shop differently to celebrate the area’s individuality, which is just one of the reasons the project appealed to me. On a more personal level, I’m so pleased we’ve been able to include objects that inspire me personally and I hope, in turn, they’ll inspire the suite’s guests.”

“It is exciting to have a Sir Paul Smith suite at Brown’s Hotel. It is elegant, bright and happy and has a lovely sense of fun,” added Olga Polizzi of Rocco Forte Hotels. The sitting room is full of interest with its wall of pictures, smart sofas and flamboyant cushions. The bedroom is strikingly different, with its sense of calm and space. He has caught the feeling of Brown’s Hotel, but with a Paul Smith twist.”

The Paul Smith Suite starts at £5,500 per night (about AED24,900); roccofortehotels.com
