After months of rising hostilities and strikes in Lebanon‘s south, Israel intensified its air campaign on Hezbollah this week, launching ‘extensive strikes’ to target the Iran-backed militant group. Tuesday 24th September marked the deadliest day of strikes in Lebanon since the 2006 war, killing more than 550 people as Israel’s military’s carried out air strikes. Air strikes were largely in the southern and eastern parts of the country near Lebanon’s border with Syria, where Hezbollah has a strong presence.
More than 500 people have been killed – men, women and children – and more than 1,800 injured as residents were forced to flee their home. More than 116,000 people have been displaced, with families forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in crowded schools. With the crisis showing no signs of de-escalation, many Lebanon charities are running to help get crucial aid and support to those affected. Here’s how to help the people of Lebanon now at this critical time.

Islamic Relief
After Lebanon suffered its deadliest day in decades, Islamic Relief launched a £10 million (AED49 million) emergency appeal to support people affected by an escalation in Israeli attacks. Islamic Relief provides continuous lifesaving humanitarian aid in Lebanon, and since last October has been supporting displaces and host communities in food, bedding, medical supplies and other essentials. Its interventions have been particularly critical in Nabatieh, Tyre, Bekaa, and Baalbek, where most of the displaced are seeking refuge. Donations support food parcels, meat packs and hygeine kits to keep people fed and clean, along with blankets, mattresses and medical supplies for hospitals and satellite clinics.

Lebanese Red Cross
Working with those on the ground, the Lebanese Red Cross is calling on donations for key factors, including ambulance response and search and rescue, blood transfusion services, primary healthcare for chronic diseases (so those undergoing cancer treatment and such don’t get forgotten), and disaster relief – provide relief to the displaced in the form of blankets, shelter assistance, food items, hygiene items, and water & sanitation services. Their work is vital and need your donations.
