matcha in dubai

A comforting ritual that’s packed with goodness, matcha is drink that’s got to be done right. As avid matcha lovers, here’s where we get our fix in Dubai

Good matcha can be hard to come by – especially for a discerning devotee. There’s a real art to making the perfect cup, be it hot, iced or in a speciality smoothie – and only few get it right. And that’s without getting started on matcha snacks and treats. Here are our go-to spots for the absolute best matcha in Dubai, from the classic hot matcha latte (we take ours with oat milk) to inventive matcha lemonades and frappes.

The best places for matcha in Dubai

Matcha at Splendour Fields

Splendour Fields

You’re in safe hands at Splendour Fields – the JLT neighbourhood cafe and coffee shop from the Eatx team (the masterminds behind cult breakfast hotspots like Tom&Serg, The Sum of Us and Common Grounds). The all-day cafe and coffee shop, deli, grocer, florist and ‘urban garden’ captures the essence of Australia’s laid-back, beachy coffee culture. The menu features Eatx’s signature coffee and freshly baked bread from the group’s in-house bakery, Rise&Dawn, alongside classics like ricotta hot cakes, almond granola, apple and cinnamon porridge and mushroom and truffle Benedict. There are three hero matcha serves on the menu – all delivered to perfection: an Avantcha matcha latte (the classic, served using ceremonial=grade powder, honey and any milk you like), a Magical Lemonade with blue matcha and, for something experimental and indulgent, an organic matcha frappe with coconut milk, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and coconut flakes. Enjoy it inside, on the terrace, or grab it on-the-go from the garden kiosk.

Nette

It would be wrong if the Matcha Club – a trendy padel, movement and lifestyle destination – wasn’t one of the best spots for matcha in Dubai, but luckily, that’s not the case. Nestled in the grounds of the Al Quoz club between Orange Padel courts and a yoga studio is Nette, a trendy cafe from the team that brought you Casette. The serene space is an urban sanctuary with minimalist interiors (white, exposed wood) and a lovely outdoor courtyard centred around a large mango tree where yogis in Lululemon converge post-class and families occupy the booths. Food is Japanese-inspired inspired and matcha dishes include strawberry matcha acai bowl, matcha pain perdu and matcha cheesecake brownies. The drinking matcha is earthy, smooth and prepared to perfection – and served in a bowl-like cup to truly make the most of it.

Blu Matcha

‘We believe that anxiety-free energy is a human right,’ reads the motto of Blu Matcha, a grab-and-go- matcha spot turned multi-location must-visit and bonafide lifestyle brand. Founded in 2020 by smiling entrepreneurs Robby and Ash, the small, homegrown business serves the finest quality Japanese matcha and makes matcha feel like a lifestyle choice rather than just a drink (they’re that dedicated). There are two locations in Dubai, Alserkal Avenue and Dryp Studio in Dubai Marina. It’s also available for delivery via Deliveroo and Talabat – so anyone in the city can enjoy its 14 signature matchas (think vanilla almond, blu, salted caramel and strawberry), classic serves, matcha ‘cleansers’ and even matcha soft serve ice cream. Common Grounds

With branches across the city, Common Grounds is the go-to for those in need of a matcha fix. Located in shopping malls (Mall of the Emirates, Nakheel Mall and Dubai Hills), in DIFC, JLT, JBR and its newest rainbow-hued kiosk on Kite Beach, the bright, breezy and laid-back coffee shop feels like a cheerful Aussie hangout and is one of the city’s most popular spots for breakfast, coffee catch ups and lunch. The matcha is earthy with a hint of sweetness, and the baristas always whip up the perfect brew – whether it’s with homemade almond milk or over ice.

Megumi at nowhere cafe in Abu Dhabi

Megumi Matcha

Owned and operated by Japanese woman, Megumi Matcha was Dubai’s first speciality matcha shop, bringing the finest organic ceremonial grade matcha to the city and its stockists. The brand is first and foremost a store and supplier, working with local cafes and coffee shops to supply its delicate and delicious powders straight from the farm in Kyoto to venues across the UAE, but once a month, Megumi hosts a matcha workshop at Jumeirah‘s Vanilla Sukkar. The Emirati mother-daughter-owned cafe is a reflection of the brand. Matcha lovers can learn the history of Japanese tea, its ceremonies, learn how matcha is grown, how to make the perfect cup, and of course, enjoy plenty of delicious matcha brews and matcha-infused sweet treats.

The Guild

With its sleek scarlet interiors, seductive lighting, cosy corners and indulgent brasserie-style menus, The Guild isn’t first to mind when considering spots to get matcha in Dubai. However, the stunning restaurant is from the Eatx team, the minds behind Common Grounds, Tom & Serg, Splendour Fields and more, and as a result, coffee, breakfast, fresh juices and matcha are all available – and taken seriously.
