From epicurean experiences capping five-star hotels to farm-to-table eateries
The Gulf archipelago of Bahrain is known for showing its visitors, and residents, a good time. Despite its small size, it’s known across the globe for its trade, entertainment and culture, giving a warm and welcoming vibe and attracting tourists and those who hop over the land border from Saudi Arabia for a fun weekend. Because of this, it has a burgeoning dining scene of world favourites and homegrown talents, one even making it into the prestigious MENA’s 50 Best list. From acclaimed regional names to celebrity chefs, these are the best restaurants in Bahrain.
The eyes of Frieda look down on your when dining at Cantina Kahlo – a bold, colourful and buzzing emerald-green dining room at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. There’s a feeling of being thousands of miles away in Mexico City, a feeling which follows through to the flavour-packed menu. Think mezcal cocktails, streetfood inspired dishes, premium grills and fresh seafood. Soups are also a star dish, and the speciality of Chef Hector Miguel Mendoza Becerra, and there are three to choose from which change each week. Bahraini through and through, casual Lumee is one of the best all-day restaurants in Bahrain, offering somewhere with casual vibes and fantastic food. The menu offers a contemporary take on Middle East classics, such as achaar hummus (the original dish topped with a lime and chilli pickle mix) and tikka Lumee: black lime on juicy pieces of beef tenderloin. Drinks include saffron lemonade, and there’s seating both indoors and on the buzzy outdoor terrace.

Balinese-inspired Monsoon playfully promises to flood the senses, with a pagoda roof, dragon-guarded carved doors and a eastern-inspired dining room transporting you to the Orient. Fine dining traditions of Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam feature. A sushi bar pumps out popular sushi platters, which glamorous locals share in the tatami area (simple Japanese straw mats are covered in red and gold cushions). The main dining room with its slick wooden floors, rattan roof and carved Buddhas is more formal – serving Thai classics. Our favourite is the terrace, set around an ornamental pool with a charming wooden bridge.

Haji’s Cafe is anything but luxurious – and that’s what makes it so special. As the Kingdom’s oldest restaurants, visiting Haji’s is a cultural immersion into Bahrain itself, offering local cuisine in a friendly and informal yet aesthetic setting. Open since 1950, the cafe sits in the heart of the old souk and serves traditional Bahrani cuisine with both indoor and outdoor seating – outdoor is located in a bustling thoroughfare and filled with energy while indoors has cool white stone walls, blue accents, wooden tables and nostalgic black and white photographs. Come for the Bahraini breakfast, popular with locals and a spread of fresh warm bread (of which your stack never diminishes), beans, eggs, keema, dal, foul, liver, omelette and more, or lunch and dinner for barbecued meat, mixed grills, traditional liver and more.

Fusions by Tala at the Gulf Hotel is led by one of MENA’s renowned female chefs, Tala Bashmi, a picturesque restaurant overlooking Manama’s skyline. Known across the region, the restaurant has made repeta appearances in the prestigious MENA’s 50 Best list, cementing it as one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Bahrain. The real point of difference here is that Tala herself hand-picks ingredients from local farmers ensuring the highest quality and freshness of her food, which is a contemporary take on traditional Bahraini food. While the menu fuses Middle Eastern cuisine with fine dining, the interiors are stripped back and modern and have a raw industrial-style vibe: hanging filament lights and plenty of greenery.
